CATS is primarily funded to transport critically ill children in the North Thames, Essex, Herts and Beds regions to a regional paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). CATS also work closely with the Addenbrookes Hospital PICU in Cambridge to retrieve critically ill children in East Anglia to a PICU bed in Cambridge or elsewhere.

In addition to our regional remit, CATS have national contracts for long-distance paediatric retrieval of children requiring supra-regional services such as extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), acute liver failure (ALF), and embolisation for the Vein of Galen malformation. Long-distance transfers are usually performed by air (helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft).
